Snakes! Mystery and Intrigue

We love snakes! But we understand that they’re not for everyone.  But what is it about these reptiles that makes some people so uncomfortable? Join us as we learn about the mystery and intrigue of snakes from Dr. William K. Hayes with Loma Linda University’s Department of Earth and Biological Sciences.  Dr. Hayes will be bringing live snakes for us to see!  This event is free and family friendly.

Second Saturdays: Pinecones

What’s so great about a pine cone?  Well, a lot, actually.  They’re good for more than just holiday decoration.  Pine cones are at the heart of the reproductive process of evergreen trees!  Come and learn all about male and female pine cones this Second Saturdays!  This event is free and family friendly.

‘What does the fox say?’ Well, frankly, he’s a fox- he shouldn’t be saying anything!  But that’s ok- we’ve got more than enough to say for him!  Foxes have endeared themselves to us in legends, stories, and media for centuries.  But are they really as crafty and clever as they’ve been portrayed?  Come and find out this Second Saturdays as we focus on Riverside’s very own gray fox that lives in the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park!  This event is free and family friendly.

Fungi Day
November 19, 2016 | 10am-1pm | Ameal Moore Nature Center | Free

When a tree falls in the forest, does it still make a sound if no one’s there to hear it?  We can’t answer that for you, but we can tell you who cleans up the mess!  Fungi may not look like much, but they’re the mighty crew of debris clearing organisms!  Come into the center on this special Saturday as we hang with UCR’s Botany and Plant Sciences Department to learn all about how fungi clean up nature’s mess.  It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it!  So join us as we trust the fungus- because without them, we’d be well up to our elbows in decomposing matter!

This event is free and family friendly.

Fossil Day

National Fossil Day is Wednesday October 12 and to celebrate, the Ameal Moore Nature Center is partnering with the University of California Riverside to have a Fossil Day of our own!  Come out Saturday, October 22 for this fun event as we dig through time for a glimpse at how the world has looked throughout the ages!  Join us for a guided walk through time, fun activities inside and out of the nature center, and crafts.  This event is free and family friendly.

Join us this Second Saturdays event as we show you how to nature journal!  Nature journaling is fun, educational, and relaxing.  A nature journal is a personal account and collection of your own observations, thoughts, sketches, photos, and plant specimens.  It is something that naturalists keep to recall, record, and enjoy nature.  Come for a day of creativity, science, and fun!  This event is open to all ages. Materials will be provided.

Come meet Mayor Bailey, enjoy a healthy, morning walk through Sycamore Canyon, and explore the Ameal Moore Nature Center.  The walk leaves from the nature center at 8am.  Please wear appropriate hiking clothing and footwear.  Don’t forget your water and sunscreen!

Join us this Second Saturdays event as we discuss hibernation!  Most people know that bears hibernate, but did you know that other animals do too?  There’s more to it than just taking a long nap!  Come in for this free, family friendly event as we talk about the importance of hibernation!

Guided Nature Hikes

Nature Hikes will be lead by nature center staff members every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. The hike will start from the nature center and will begin at 9am unless otherwise indicated. Hikes are free and open to visitors (though please be aware that the hikes will go uphill). Hikes last for 1 hour.  Be sure to wear appropriate footwear, sunscreen (and other sun protective gear if needed), and to bring water. If you would like to take pictures or use our free Nature Spotter app please feel free to B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device)!  Also, feel free to bring binoculars for any bird spotting.
