Little Seedlings Nature Preschool December
Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday | 9am-12pm | Ameal Moore Nature Center | $160 for Riverside residents | ages 3-5 (must be potty trained)
Little Seedlings, the only nature preschool of its kind in the region, introduces youth to ABC’s, 123’s, colors, and animals through the wonder of nature in preparation for kindergarten. Every moment in nature is an opportunity to teach little education fundamentals through leaves, feathers, rocks, and wildlife at the Ameal Moore nature Center located within the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park. Join the Inland Empire Waterkeepers for this fun, nature based opportunity! Cost is $160/4 weeks ($170 for non Riverside residents) Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Guided Nature Hikes

The fire in the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park came very close to the center, but we’re still here!  Come out for a special hike this month as we talk about fire and the park.

Nature Hikes will be lead by nature center staff members every 1st Saturday of the month. The hike will start from the nature center and will begin at 9am unless otherwise indicated. Hikes are free and open to visitors (though please be aware that the hikes will go uphill). Hikes last for approximately 1 hour. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear, sunscreen (and other sun protective gear if needed), and to bring water. If you would like to take pictures or use our free Nature Spotter app please feel free to B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device)! Also, feel free to bring binoculars for any bird spotting.

Climb to Conquer Cancer  CANCELED
December 7, 2019 | 7:30am-12pm | Ameal Moore Nature Center | $35 per hiker
The American Cancer Society and the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department are coming together for a hike!  Join us at the Ameal Moore Nature Center while we host the American Cancer Society in their Climb to Conquer Cancer.  This hike is an intermediate level hike at 4.1 miles (the nature center’s standard 0.6 mile guided hike route will also be available).  Register at HERE.  Registration includes a T-shirt.

Unfortunately, this event has been canceled by the organizers.

Second Saturdays: Fossil Day!

We’re celebrating National Fossil Day a little late this year, but we aren’t skipping any of the fun!  Join us for our most popular Second Saturdays topic of the year!  Dig for dinos and other prehistoric creatures, touch real fossils, talk to an archaeologist, sort fossils, and paint a plaster fossil to take home!  This event is free and family friendly.

Citizen Science Initiative

The Ameal Moore Nature Center is a hub for Citizen Science! We love helping citizens understand that they can help contribute to science and regularly help visitors join Citizen Science projects. Sometimes it can be as easy as taking a picture! Starting this year, we’re launching our C.S.I. (Citizen Science Initiative) days. Every 3rd Saturday of the month, we’ll be specifically focusing on a Citizen Science Project and will be teaching visitors how they can get involved! Join us and get your science on!

Who’s that flying around at night?  Our silent flying neighbors are plentiful in the area and very beneficial!  Join us as we talk about owls, their diets, and the kinds you’ll find in Riverside! Make an owl mask and dissect an owl pellet!   This event is free and family friendly.

Santa Ana River Trail (SART) Bike Day & Open House

Looking for something fun to do with the kids?  Come take a leisurely bike ride on the Santa Ana River Trail.  Each trail access point features a family short course ride.  You choose where and when you want to start and finish.  Riders of all abilities are welcome.  Ride at your own pace at this fun, free event and get in shape with the possibility of winning prizes! The nature center will be at the trail access point #2 at Ryan Bonaminio Park with a craft!

Long Night of Arts and Innovation

Join our staff at the City’s 5th Long Night of Arts and Innovation!  This long night is a time for everyone in the City to gather and exhibit all of the things they do that involve the arts and innovation.  Ever wonder what Riverside does to be innovative?  Then this event is for you!  Our staff will be in attendance promoting the City’s newest community center, the Youth Innovation Center- opening January 2020!  This event is free and family friendly.

Second Saturdays: Night Time Critters!

Who’s that walking around at night?  And why are they so good at it?  Nocturnal animals thrive in the dark when we would be stumbling around!  But how can they do that?  And why can’t we?  This Second Saturdays join us as we examine the critters of the night! Riverside Youth Innovation Lab

Come over to the Riverside Municipal Airport for a fun day of makerspace activities!  Participate in a STEM Lab, see the upcycling sensation the Rad Hatter, and have fun with interactive displays!  Join the Ameal Moore Nature Center staff at the Parks, Recreation and Community Services booth as we make buttons and promote our newest community center, the Youth Innovation Center (coming January 2020)!

Eastside Fall Festival

Need a fun, safe place to celebrate the season?    The Eastside Fall Festival will have games, entertainment, trick-or-treating, and more!  Looking for a haunted house?  We have you covered too!  The Fright Night Haunted Maze hosted at the Youth Opportunity Center located on the same campus promises to be fun and scary!  The staff at the Ameal Moore Nature Center will be at this fun and free event!  Join us at Bobby Bonds Park outside of the Cesar Chavez Community Center at 2060 University Ave. and learn about bones! The Eastside Fall Festival event is free and family friendly, however some booths are pay to play (ages 3-14 recommended).  The Youth Opportunity Center haunted maze has a $3 entry fee (ages 13+ recommended).

Reid Park Halloween Carnival

Need a fun, safe place to celebrate Halloween?  Take a trip to Reid Park for a fun and spooktacular Halloween carnival!  Games, inflatables, and candy- OH MY!   Come dressed up and spook us with your costumes!  The staff at the Ameal Moore Nature Center will be at this fun and free event!  Join us at Reid Park outside of the Ruth H. Lewis Community Center at 701 Orange St. and learn about bones!  The Reid Park Halloween Carnival is a free and family friendly event, however some booths are pay to play.

PARK(ing) Day

PARK(ing) Day is a global event where artists and the community collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks.  Join the Ameal Moore Nature Center at the Parks, Recreation and Community Services parking spot as we have some fun downtown!

Riverside was once the richest city in the nation thanks to our beautiful navel oranges!  Join us this Second Saturdays as we examine this amazing fruit and answer the question: ‘What’s so great about a navel orange?’  Special guests from UCR join us to present on citrus and answer all your questions about the current challenges and crisis that the citrus industry faces!  This event is free and family friendly.

Butterflies have been described as nature’s jewels.  They’re beautiful and graceful, but there’s also helpful too!  Come in this Second Saturdays event and learn about the butterfly life cycle and their place in nature, try your hand at a caterpillar guessing game, do a craft, and take a selfie on our butterfly wing wall!  This event is free and family friendly.

Explore Riverside Together is a free fundraising event.  Produced by My Learning Studio OUTREACH and the Riverside Convention Center, a division of Raincross Hospitality.  Residents are encourage to sign up for a ‘Discovery Passport’ event.  Similar to a scavenger hunt, this event is a chance to visit locations and discover the wonderful resources available in the city!  The Ameal Moore Nature Center will be a location to visit.  Come explore the canyon with us during one of our two guided hikes that day (9am and 12:30pm) and chat with Riverside Public Utilities representatives!  There will be a free craft and activity and fun giveaways!

Fire is something anyone living in Southern California is familiar with.  In fact, we often joke that we have 5 seasons here: Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring, and Fire!  We usually only think of fire as a destructive force, but in reality, it’s a way that nature renews an area and triggers new life and growth!  Join us this Second Saturdays as we explore the benefits of fire.  Test yourself after learning the five basic rules of fire prevention and earn a Smokey Certificate too!  This event is free and family friendly.

Mothers Day

The Ameal Moore Nature Center is open on Mother’s Day!  Join us for a fun activity just for mom!  Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Riverside Public Utilities, we’ll be making butterfly boxes and giving out milkweed while supplies last (one box per visitor and one plant per family).  Come in and decorate a butterfly box for mom and pick up a milkweed seedling for her garden!

Weed Warrior Volunteer Day

Join us for the 3rd annual weeding event!  Come for a day of volunteering and help to fight back the invasive plant, Sahara mustard!  Led by local scientists, we’ll weed out the mustard, which displaces our native plants.  Come ready to work in the sun with a hat, sun screen, work gloves, water, snacks, and sturdy walking shoes.  Activity waivers are required and will be available at the event.  Parents or guardians must sign for participants under 18.  This event is a joint effort between the City of Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, the University of California Riverside Cooperative Extension, the California Native Plant Society Riverside-San Bernardo Chapter, and the Santa Ana River Orange County Weed Management Area.
