Riverside’s Long Night of Arts and Innovation

The City of Riverside’s Long Night of Arts and Innovation will showcase the best of our four universities, technologies, innovations, performing and visual arts, individual exhibit, presentations, demonstrations, and artistic performances in numerous downtown venues. The Ameal Moore Nature Center will be participating with its parent site the Riverside Metropolitan Museum.  Hope to see you there!

Riverside BioBlitz

Please join us at the Ameal Moore Nature Center Saturday October 17, 2015 from 10am-4pm as we host a BioBlitz! A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying conducted by scientists, naturalists, and volunteers. We encourage people of all ages and abilities to participate in a variety of tasks led by scientists and naturalists from Western Riverside County’s Regional Conservation Authority, the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, UCR, and more.

Activities during the daylight hours will include mapping wildlife burrows to understand some of our rarest species, comparing insect diversity in grazed and ungrazed portions of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park, and looking at the phenology (seasonal changes) of perennial plants.  Evening activities will focus on bats.

Make sure you come prepared with water, snacks, sunscreen, and sensible shoes. Don’t forget to download the Museum’s free Nature Spotter app to help catalog what you see! Join us this month for Seconds Saturdays as we focus on birds and birding!  This free family-friendly event will include information on birds, birding, bird themed crafts, and guided bird watching hikes in the park.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Come brush up on your bird watching skills as we discuss the art of birding!  Special guest birder Professor Normand Ellstrand will be leading a bird watching hike from 11:30am-12:30pm!  Professor Ellstrand will be giving a brief talk for beginning birders at 11:15am before leading the hike at 11:30am.  If you have binoculars then you’ll want to bring them along for this high flyin’ day of spying nature’s flyers!

A speaker from our partners, the Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District (RCRCD), will be with us providing information on birds as well as giving a talk on bird nests!  Come in to see a nest collection and to learn more about our feathered friends.

The nature center would like to remind visitors to please bring water and other necessities (such as sunscreen, protective clothing, and proper footwear) along if they plan to hike in the park.
