Junior Scientist Day: Dissection

Do you have a student who wants to be a scientist?  Are they interested in biology? Or maybe they’re just curious?  Junior Scientist Days are for your student!  Junior Scientist Days are geared toward middle school students and focus on various careers in the sciences.  Visitors are invited to examine a dissection and learn about why we still continue this scientific practice at this free science event!  Please be aware that animal remains will be present at this event and plan accordingly for your visit.  This event is best for middle school ages and up (normal nature center activities will be available for smaller children, however the event itself will not have content for small children).

Wings and Things

Summer is full of contract classes at the Ameal Moore Nature Center!  To register and for more information on all contract classes available this summer, visit RivReg.org.

As a Mad Science flight cadet in training, this hands-on mad Science program teaches you all about aerodynamics and the world around us!  Explore the basic principles of flight and build airplanes.  Explore the natural world and the adaptations that allow birds and beasts to thrive.  Have fun finding and magnifying nature’s smallest creatures, pour plaster casts of animal tracks, and discover what owls eat and identify the bones they leave behind!  Note: a material fee of $40 is due and payable to the instructor at the first class meeting.  Registration code 0306.2A

 

HALF DAY CLOSURE

The Ameal Moore Nature Center will be closed for part of the day Thursday August 9th from 1:30-4:30pm.  The Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park will remain open with regular hours of 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.  We hope everyone enjoys their visit to the park!  We will reopen Friday August 10th with regular open hours.

Why just play Minecraft when you can create Minecraft?  In this camp designed for quick learners or those with some coding experience, campers will immerse themselves in the language of computers through Minecraft!  Using Java, a professional text-based coding language, campers will learn to create Minecraft mods like “craft a sword out of mush bananas” or “spawn a flying golden cow!”  This camp will help kids to make the full transition from players to creators and open up a whole new world of Minecraft!”  Cost of registration is $200 for Riverside residents.  Registration code 0311.2A

Nature Hikes will be lead by nature center staff members every 1st Saturday of the month. The hike will start from the nature center and will begin at 9am unless otherwise indicated. Hikes are free and open to visitors (though please be aware that the hikes will go uphill). Hikes last for approximately 1 hour.  Be sure to wear appropriate footwear, sunscreen (and other sun protective gear if needed), and to bring water. If you would like to take pictures or use our free Nature Spotter app please feel free to B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device)!  Also, feel free to bring binoculars for any bird spotting.

Second Saturdays: Birds: Modern Dinosaurs!

February is bird month at the nature center!  Have you heard that birds are related to dinosaurs?  That’s pretty cool!  But just how are our little birds related to gigantic dinos?  Join us this Second Saturdays event as we focus on our fine feathered friends!  This event is free and family friendly.

 

Citizen Science Initiative

The Ameal Moore Nature Center is a hub for Citizen Science!  We love helping citizens understand that they can help contribute to science and regularly help visitors join Citizen Science projects.  Sometimes it can be as easy as taking a picture!  Starting this year, we’re launching our C.S.I. (Citizen Science Initiative) days.  Every 3rd Saturday of the month, we’ll be specifically focusing on a Citizen Science Project and will be teaching visitors how they can get involved!  Join us and get your science on!

This C.S.I. day join us as we participate in the global project The Great Backyard Bird Count!  Scientists and citizens all over the world participate in this yearly global project first created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society.  We’ll be leading 2 hikes into the park at 9am and 10am to participate in the event at the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park but will also be teaching visitors how to participate in their own neighborhoods all day long.  Bring your binoculars and come prepared to help us count birds!

Nocturnal Naturalists at the Nature Center

Calling all Boy and Girl Scout Troops!  Bring your group for a sleepover at the nature center, enjoy a nighttime hike, have close encounters with nocturnal animals while completing journeys and badges!  $50 per youth (includes snack and breakfast and is open to any troop of 10 or more campers).  Brought to you by the Inland Empire Waterkeepers and hosted by the Ameal Moore Nature Center.  Contact the Inland Empire Waterkeepers to book your adventure today!  (951) 530-8823

 

Birthday Parties
By appointment | Ameal Moore Nature Center | $300  per party | Best suited for ages 13 and under
Calling Junior Naturalists!  Host your next birthday party at the Ameal Moore Nature Center.  Parties include a nature hike with a naturalist, meeting live animals, choice of nature crafts or science activities (i.e. making a shark tooth necklace, owl pellet dissections, and animal track molds).  Note: Customer must provide their own tableware, decorations, food, drinks, and cake.

Parties are $300 each and last for 3 hours (this includes set up and clean up).  Max capacity is 30 birthday participants (children) and 20 adults.  Birthday parties at the nature center are best suited for birthday boys and girls under the age of 13.  Parties are brought to you by the Inland Empire Waterkeepers and hosted at the Ameal Moore Nature Center.  Contact the Inland Empire Waterkeepers to book your party today!  (951) 530-8823

Little Seedlings, the only nature preschool of its kind in the region, introduces youth to ABC’s, 123’s, colors, and animals through the wonder of nature in preparation for kindergarten brought to you by the Inland Empire Waterkeepers, hosted by the Ameal Moore Nature Center.  Every moment in nature is an opportunity to teach little education fundamentals through leaves, feathers, rocks, and wildlife at the Ameal Moore nature Center located within the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park.
